J-1 Scholar Responsibilities & Regulations


J-1 Scholars are responsible for learning, understanding, and complying with U.S. federal laws and regulations governing J-1 visa status. Failure to do so may violate the scholar’s legal status in the United States. These responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:

Engage in an in-person program
Report address, telephone, or email address changes
Abide by employment regulations
Depart the United States within the 30 day grace period
Report any early departure
Understand the two-year bar on repeat participation
Maintain J program objective
Report any changes in your program
Understand the two-year home residency requirement
Keep documents valid and accurate
Get a travel endorsement and understand your travel documents
Maintain adequate health insurance
